英國知名的學府 "牛津大學" University of Oxford
從清末就出名到現在, 但是, "牛津" 一詞恐怕是翻譯上的錯誤.

考慮 Oxford 這個詞, 拆解成兩部份: ox, ford. 採用 Cambridge 字典的解釋.

Ox, a bull which has had its reproductive organs removed, used in the past
for pulling loads on farms, or, more generally, any adult of the cattle family

翻譯成 "牛" 應當是沒有問題.

Ford, an area in a river or stream which is not deep and can be crossed
on foot or in a vehicle

翻譯成 "津" 就有問題了.

採用教育部字典的說法,

津, 1.渡口 2.交通要道 3.水、汁液 4.口水 5.滋潤

但是 ford 所指的並不是船舶所使用的 "渡口", 而是指可以徒步涉水而過的淺處.

考慮這樣的字義差異, Oxford 一詞如果採取意譯而不音譯時, 應該要翻成
"牛涉" 才合於其意涵.

涉, 1.徒步渡水 2.乘船渡水 3.經歷 4.牽連、相關 5.進入、陷入 6.泛讀、博覽

所以, 我決定開始推廣 "牛涉" 做為 Oxford 的譯名.

牛津 = 牛的口水?! XD
